Room Full of Mirrors

Room Full of Mirrors for four channel tape and amplified piano.
The first movement is based around variants on a series of nine short gestures, a gesture in this case being defined as something such as a repeated single note, a chord, a single note with grace note ornamentation etc.
The tape part starts this series of variants while the live piano part mirrors the variant sequence in retrograde, weaving its way around the tape part, gradually shifting register and pace.
Each of the nine gestures on the tape part are not only defined from one another by their character and their relationship to one another in time, but also by their relationship to one another in space. Each of the gestures has its own direction and velocity as it rotates around the speakers, orbiting the live piano.

The second movement is a mobile structure and is much freer, the performer chooses between a series of fragments playing against the tape part that comprises a series of layered improvisations on the same fragments. The fragments are based on relationships that arise between the live and tape parts from the first movement.
