I recently recorded the first hour of the 24 hour piece for Disklavier – this is another piece using magic squares as a structural determinant – in the case of this piece I use four voices making four, eight unit transects, over the duration of approximately one hour (magic sums occurring about every fifteen minutes). I will make a continuous recording of the twenty four hour piece in the coming months as soon as i convince Goldsmiths Electronic Music Studios to reinterpret the piano as a computer thus allowing me it to run continuously overnight.
The above image is a single frame of the video score generated by my script and shows one of the sixty four units of the composition framework used in the first hour.
The composition was made using the python scripting language outputting to both midi (interpreted by the disklavier) and to notation using the Lilypond notation package solely for the purpose of analysis and troubleshooting on my part.

I will teach a workshop in Installation Design and Interactivity in the University of the Arts Camberwell and LCC. Just made a cute little ring modulator based on some schematics i found here: http://www.cgs.synth.net/ Its based on two centre tapped transforms I got from Maplins and 4 germanium diodes i got from Farnells. I also made a little PCB for it so its a bit sturdier than the breadboard version. very easy little project and it sounds very nice. I used the geda suite of PCB design tools to make the PCB http://www.gpleda.org but I could have just as easily drawn it in Inkscape with such a basic design.

excerpt from the score Piano Squared Rob Canning 2009
My latest piece for solo or multiple pianos Piano Squared (working title) is very nearly finished so I have made a page for it. There is still a little work to be done on it but i am putting the current state of drafts online for feedback from potential performers. The piece can be performed by a soloist or by multiple piano players with or without tape and/or live electronics. The duration is variable as are many other elements of the work. The suggested duration range is between 15 minutes and <1 hour It is part of the same series of magic square works as melencolia for string quartet which was recently giving its Finnish Premiere by the contempo string quaret. One potential goal at the moment is to collect as many different realisations from as many performs as i can and then to produce a CD/DVD of the results. Kyklos (String Sextet version) makes national ISCM World Music Days selection.
Kyklos has been included in the selection of the Assosciation of Irish composers for next years national entry to the ISCM 2010 World Musc Days in Sydney, Australia. The 2010 ISCM World New Music Days are taken place April 30th to May 9th 2010 in Sydney – Kyklos was composed using only FLOSS (puredata, lilypond, bash)

On the 12 of July the Con Tempo string quartet gave the Finnish Premiere of Melencolia I for string quartet, live electronics and quadraphonic sound diffusion. Thanks to those involved in making this happen. The Association of Irish Composers, Con Tempo String Quartet, Perttu Haapanen and to Marko Myöhänen for taking care of the live electronics.

5! for Solo Percussion is the first of a series of computer assisted composition studies which use the perl scripting language as the main tool. 5! or 5 factorial means every possible combination of 5 things in this case that means 120 different permutations of 5 elements (percussion) – an interesting study for percussion using a sequence of patterns that are never repeated, there is a health dose of indeterminacy in parameters other than duration and note order allowed – a pretty tricky piece to play….

this piece is based on a sequence of 5 elements which are alternated in every possible way – how many different ways can 5 things be arranged? – 5×4x3×2x1=120

Started work on the audio side of Symphony of Deptford a collaboration with Adnan Hadzi of deptford.tv. I will be using the deptford.tv database (http://watch.deptford.tv/) as a source of audio material and using the meta information that is attached to these files to impose a structure on to a generative sound installation. Finally I have managed to stabalise the net install of my piece “radiokulturo”. It is now streaming 24/7 from an Icecast server hosted by http://dek.spc.org in Greenwich, London. The net install is not complete yet as the balance and spatial location of the streams is not ideal – this will be the next step. at the moment it is a maze of mplayer and jack connections streaming to icecast via darkice – i started working in piping through ecasound to adjust balances etc but have decided it will be better running on a SC3 instance.
radiokulturo was most recently projected in concert in Winchester, UK (stereo version).

Kyklos (κύκλος = “cycle, circle”) is a work for 6 flutes, it can be performed live, presented as a six channel surround sound tape piece or as a piece for flute/flutes and tape or as an installation. There is no conventional hardcopy score for this piece. The score for kyklos exists as a video file which is exivilent to a 17 meter long score in six parts. This is scrolled through over the duration of 18 minutes. The performer/s play from a projection of this score which may also be visible to the audience.
Kyklos is a piece i have been working on for quite a while now, bringing together number of different areas of research in computer assisted composition i’ve been following. I recently got together with flautist Joe O’Farrel to make a recording.
The documentation, mixes, binaural and spatialisation patches are stilll in progress but there is a stereo .ogg and a dvd .iso of the score available for download.
Again, entirely FLOSS workflow top to tail.

I didn’t really hear much about this but i did hear that a masters student of perfomance (clarinet) performed Costruzione Illegittima for clarinet and live electronics as part of his final recitation in Royal Irish Acadamy of Music, Dublin – he got a 1st so i guess he did a good job

Lyla(by) is for solo piano (with optional amplification and live processing) – it was written as a kind of lullaby for alex and floras baby lyla. It was the first piece I made with the notation software Lilypond and so the first piece of instrumental music I have made with a completely FLOSS workflow. Interferences – the work composed for Robin Dingeman’s Choreography “VERY” for the Place Prize, London 2008 is now available throught the release Substrate on the netlabel GOSUB10 www.gosub10.org This tape work was composed using Csound and Blue and projected during the dance performance at about 92dB (thats pretty loud!).
